The Signifiers Retailer Spotlight: Ace in the Hole Music

Among the retail shops selling The Signifiers comic book, Ace in the Hole has one of the longest histories, dating back to its affiliation with The Record Connection on Hamilton Road, in Columbus' Southeast side.

These days, Ace in the Hole specializes in used CDs, also carrying new vinyl, used vinyl and new CDs. They are always happy to special order new vinyl and CDs for you! Among the new vinyl they've ordered for me: Muse, Sharon Jones and Dap Kings, Jimi Hendrix, Arcade Fire, Beck and Radiohead.

Ace in the Hole also carries rock magazines, rock DVDs, incense, t-shirts and posters.

Support your local music retailers and check out this store tucked into the corner of Kenny Centre.

1153 Kenny Centre, Columbus, Ohio 43220.
Monday - Friday: 11 to 7. Saturday: 11 to 5. Sunday: Closed.

The Cocteau Twins' Four-Calendar Cafe

I recently bought the album on cassette at a yard sale, for a dime.

It sounded fluttery and warped, however, so I had to throw it away.

Robert Schumann & the Post Hypnotic Muckus

Cousin Tim Baker (aka Little Timmy) kindly presented me last year with a CD of music recorded by two of his aliases, Squeeling Eels and Robert Schumann & the Post Hypnotic Muckus.

The album's a mini-masterpiece, a rewarding, synth-driven cornucopia of baroque melodies. If you like The Beach Boys' Smiley Smile or The Flaming Lips, you'll dig this muchly.

Unfortunately, the album's not for sale! The songs are available seperately, however, for free, on Tim's Pig City website.

I recommend downloading them and creating a playlist in the order of the CD:

1. Your Aunti Chlamydia
2. Restraining Your Inner Ralph
3. Skeezik
4. The Salmon Dance (Of Love)
5. Sanpan Jose
6. The Need to Be
7. Magpie
8. Same Old Thing
9. Kalimba Jan
10. Fruit Flies Like a Banana
11. Adagietto - Symphony #1 in C Minus
12. Vinagretto - Symphony #1 in C Minus
13. Geppetto - Symphony #1 in C Minus

Cartoonists Freedom Watch Update: Zunar

In July, I posted a Freedom Watch blog describing how the Home Ministry of Malaysia recently banned three of cartoonist Zunar's books: 1Funny Malaysia, Perak Darul Kartun, and Isu Dalam Kartun (IDK).

On the Reporters Without Borders site, Zunar describes the contents of these books and issues a statement of principals concerning the government's banning of his work: http://en.rsf.org/malaysia-zunar-cartoonist-banned-book-21-07-2010,37995.html

Reading Tom Jones...

...by Henry Fielding, with an occasional break for Greg Pak Hulk and Samm Schwartz Jughead comic books.

I like this aside, in Volume I, Book I, Chapter II: "Reader, I think proper, before we proceed any farther together, to acquaint thee that I intend to digress, through this whole history, as often as I see occasion, of which I am myself a better judge than any pitiful critic whatever; and here I must desire all those critics to mind their own business, and not to intermeddle with affairs or works which no ways concern them..."

Sandman Splash: The Final Version

The final inked version of my Sandman and Sandy splash. All of it was penciled and inked from scratch, including the logo.

FedEx Office didn't have a scanner large enough for this art drawn in the size ratio of Golden Age original art, so I stitched six different section scans of it together in Photoshop.

Sandman Splash Page Finds a Home

Comic book retailer and all-around great guy Emanuel Hovis, Jr. is the proud owner of a Sandman splash page I wrote and drew for him. I was happy to do it - this guy loves comics!

A lot of fun to write and draw, too. I'll soon be posting a more accurate scan of the splash here.
